Our Story

Recognized by the Hong Kong Economic Journal, TVB Kabayan, and Lingnan University, Hearts To Helpers is a student led initiative empowering domestic workers across Hong Kong through education, empowerment, and emergency relief. Founded in 2024, our team of 12 has taught over 100 helpers, shared more than 50 of their stories, and distributed over 10,000 items of clothing.
 

Our founder Kyra Lam grew up in a single parent household where her mother was the sole breadwinner. While her mother worked, Kyra was raised by her domestic worker, Mharlyn, who also carried the weight of providing for her own family back in the Philippines. Witnessing that double burden up close ignited a lifelong desire in Kyra to study and understand the lives of women in labor.
 

Throughout her childhood, Kyra's family donated second hand clothes to Mharlyn's family. She still remembers the joy on Mharlyn's face every time they received a package. As Kyra grew older, she wanted to share that feeling with more helpers. She started small, asking family and friends for donations. What began as a simple clothing drive in her bedroom soon grew into something much bigger. Kyra and her friends set up collection boxes, reached out to local businesses, and hosted events in churches and schools.
 

Throughout this, Kyra began interviewing domestic workers across Hong Kong. She discovered that their struggles went far beyond material needs. She heard stories of financial pressure, discrimination, legal battles, and so much invisible pain. That was when she knew a clothing drive was not enough. She gathered her friends and formally founded Hearts To Helpers.
 

Today, Hearts To Helpers runs on three core pillars. Education provides financial and entrepreneurial workshops. Empowerment amplifies helper voices through storytelling and public exhibitions like Lives Beyond Labor. Emergency Relief delivers clothing and disaster response to those in crisis.
 

Kyra is now building this movement while balancing her studies, proving that young people can turn personal experience into real, lasting change. At the intersection of labor rights, youth leadership, and community service, Hearts To Helpers is redefining what is possible when students decide to care.
